Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Music Therapy for Pregnancy and Postnatal

What is IUI?

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a simple fertility treatment where washed and prepared sperm is placed directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation. This helps sperm reach the egg more easily and increases the chances of pregnancy.

Who may benefit from IUI?

IUI may be advised if:

  • Mild male factor infertility (low count or motility)
  • Unexplained infertility
  • Ovulation-related problems
  • Cervical factor infertility
  • Difficulty with intercourse
  • Single women or couples using donor sperm

Your doctor will decide if IUI is suitable for you after evaluation.

How is IUI done?

The procedure involves 4 simple steps:

Ovulation Monitoring

Ovulation is tracked using ultrasound and/or medications to help release an egg.

Semen Collection & Preparation

Semen is collected and processed (“washed”) in the lab to select healthy sperm.

Insemination

The prepared sperm is gently placed into the uterus using a thin soft tube. The procedure is painless, takes 5–10 minutes, and does not require anesthesia.

After the Procedure

You can rest for a short while and return to normal activities the same day.

Is IUI painful?

No. Most women feel only mild discomfort, similar to a Pap smear. No injections or cuts are involved during the procedure itself.

What are the chances of success?

Success depends on:

  • Woman’s age
  • Cause of infertility
  • Sperm quality
  • Ovulation response

On average, 10–20% success per cycle. Many couples may require 2–3 cycles. Your doctor will guide you realistically based on your situation.

Are there any risks?

IUI is very safe. Rare risks include:

  • Mild cramping
  • Spotting
  • Multiple pregnancy (if ovulation-inducing medicines are used)
  • Serious complications are extremely rare

What should I do before IUI?

  • Follow medication instructions carefully
  • Abstain from intercourse for 2–3 days before semen collection
  • Reduce stress, eat healthy, and sleep well
  • Avoid smoking and alcohol

What should I do after IUI?

  • Normal activities are allowed
  • Avoid heavy exercise for 24 hours
  • Take prescribed medications regularly
  • Pregnancy test is usually done 14 days later
